  1. Leadership Ruck: The quest for Contentment (Q3.11)
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of.,.Joy?

Ruck Pax: Flo, Valiant, Soda Pop, Huckleberry, Van Gogh, Huffy, Raven, LEGO, FNG (Mike Koeniger), Deliverance (Q)
    Run Pax: Isosceles

    Contentment
The “HIM Accelerates his Contentment by consistently pursuing Joy rather than Happiness”
Question 1: Joy and Happiness are used interchangeably in our culture, but is there a difference?

From Q Source: “Joy is a permanent state of hopeful satisfaction unaffected by external circumstance, Happiness is a mere transitory positive feeling governed completely by external circumstance”
My simplification of this is that Happiness is a temporary good feeling based on something that happens. Joy is a long lasting satisfaction that isn’t affected by events outside of you.
Question 2: Can you think of an example of Happiness vs. an example of Joy?

Again, from the Q Source “Joy is the fruit of (the) HIM’s enduring devotion to Getting Right and staying that way through the DRP…It withstands bad weather, physical ailments and financial downturns. Joy is the stainless steel of the soul”
“Happiness is the warm comfort that derives from a toasty fire and a mug of hot cocoa on a cold night…wholly dependent on physical or emotional gratification”
So, we’ve finally got there. Joy comes from Getting Right, that is improving our fitness, Serving Others, and Connecting with our Higher Power. Happiness is satisfying our desires for pleasure and comfort.
Question 3: How can you live more as a Joy-Seeking Pro and less like a Happiness-Seeking Mascot?

The Stoic Philosophers expressed a similar idea regarding Joy almost 2,000 years ago.
“Joy (is) experienced by the sage when he is fully aware of his own virtue.” The Stoics believed that Virtue was the only Good. This is living by the four Virtues of Prudence (wisdom), Justice, Fortitude (strength and courage), and Temperance (self-control). The important thing is that these can never be taken away from you.
Question 4: Share an act of Virtue that you took Joy in. A time you were Wise, Just, Strong, Courageous, or Self-Controlled…

Before the Stoics there was a shepherd boy, who slayed a giant, and gives us a final thought on Joy… “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16, Verse 11)
Question 5: Have you found Joy in the presence of a higher power? Is there a special time you can remember?

The Q Source notes that “Rough skies make good pilots.” Our goal is to develop Durability. “Durability is physical and emotional toughness that is fostered through deliberate exposure to Hardship and Chaos. It is through Hardship-suffering caused by intense Adversity-that (the) HIM learns how deep the bottom of his Pain barrel is”
Question 6: What is the relationship between Contentment and Durability?

    Commentary
A great morning to explore the concepts of Joy and Contentment. It was a Joy to share and converse with such excellent HIMs. Many followed the Ruck with a most excellent beatdown delivered by Stark, which tested our Durability.
Mike Koeniger becomes “Sawdust” (aptly named by Huckleberry)
