    Thang:
Staying in virtually one place–runners did laps up and down the stairs, while the rucker did the hill. After a while we traded venus, then traded back for the end.
Conversation starters to go with the theme of 'stationary'
    – What's the last handwritten letter you received or sent? Why are those so much better than electronic communication?

    – What's a way you have found yourself 'stuck' in life, and what broke you out of that stuckness?

    The Thang:
Stepped off into the gloom for steady miles under weight. The focus for the morning was on the mechanics of building and leading through structural transitions. The ruck was broken up by 6 specific checkpoints, forcing the PAX to evaluate their leadership frameworks:
    1. The Vision Check: Defining the required end state before moving dirt.
    2. Authority vs. Influence: The required shift from demanding compliance to earning voluntary commitment.
    3. Distributing the Load: Ensuring the right people are carrying the appropriate weight to optimize the structure.
    4. Embracing Resistance: Utilizing friction and pushback to stress-test the blueprint.
    5. The Shield Lock: Eliminating blind spots by relying on the men to our left and right.
    6. The Legacy Foundation: Ensuring the structures we are pouring our effort into are actually built to last.
    Moleskine:
Strong effort from the PAX today. The discussion covered the practical realities of driving change, from the friction of restructuring teams work, to the daily requirements of aligning with our Ms and leading our 2.0s at home.
The core takeaway is straightforward: You cannot build a heavy-duty structure on a cracked foundation, and you cannot expect the building to assemble itself. Executing the blueprint requires daily, intentional work. Stop relying on authority, start building real influence, and utilize your Shield Lock to carry the weight.

    The “Thang”:

This was like the Impossible Mile, but with a block. Format was the same with different MOTs:

    3 Lateral Ape Hop
    4 Suitcase Carry

Spreadsheets from the Gloom: The text that YHC received from Meatloaf the day after this beatdown sums it up perfectly:

“I just had a blister from yesterday burst on my hand at the gym. My hands really appreciate yesterdays exercises”.

This probably should have been expected. Past Foundry run-throughs of “The Double D’s” have seen PAX complaining of hand blisters after ~400m of non-consecutive murder bunnies over the course of a single beatdown…and this beatdown started with 400m straight. An entire lap around the track before a PAX could do anything else. Which was great for me, because I love murder bunnies. But I also know that they are one of the Swamp’s least favorite exercises overall. So props to Meatloaf and Thor for coming out likely knowing that that’s what they’d be getting into.

Like the 2nd lap lunge walk of the normal Impossible Mile, the Rifle Carry lap was a bit of a reprieve after the murder bunnies. But it was also relatively fast, which meant that the ape hops came quickly after those dreaded bunnies. And if you didn’t have blisters after the murder bunnies, the ape hops were sure to do you in. I had three on my right hand…so much for padded gloves. That said, the ape hops were a bit easier than the bunnies because PAX could switch directions throughout the lap. Same for the suitcase carry…PAX could switch hands. Ideally you’d want two blocks per person for the final lap, but who carries 2 blocks with them at all times?

At the end of the day, this was a beast and very PAX dependent. Some PAX were able to finish and some PAX barely didn’t even get through 10 meters of the ape hop. Would be a good one to run to completion for time.

There was a block themed playlist that you could hear for about 10% of the beatdown.

“Block Rockin’ Beats” – The Chemical Brothers
    “Cindy Cindy” – Elvis Presley
    “Heavy” – The Black Crowes
    “Block Rocking” – Stevie Salas
“Cinderblock Garden” – All Time Low
    “Heavy” – Collective Soul
    “Block Party” – Chuck Brown
    “Cindy” – Andy Griffith
    “Heavy Things” – Phish
“Cindy Oh Cindy” – Eddie Fisher

All in all, this was pretty good. I wouldn’t be opposed to running it again for time, but I’d prefer to have two blocks per person for the suitcase carry lap. There might also be some alternative block exercises that could be subbed in for either of the last three laps. But murder bunnies need to stay.

Warm-up: Tarnished led something…might have been 40 (2 is 1) SSH in cadence…while YHC was finishing setting up after the ruck.

    The “Thang”:

One of my most ridiculous creations yet, this birthday beatdown was designed around the idea of The Big 4-0, or in this case, four big “O”s. And when you think of four “O”s, who doesn’t think of a Venn Diagram? So the beatdown theme was born: a 4 circle Venn Diagram where all four circles overlapped in the center, creating 13 unique regions throughout. Each of the 4 circles represented a certain focus of the workout: Upper Body, Lower Body, Core, and Block. As the circles started overlapping, the exercise stations created 4 new imaginary circles within the Venn Diagram. Each of those circles was a “ring” of the new, imaginary target, and the exercises became increasingly difficult as PAX moved closer towards the bullseye of that target.

Each ring of the target consisted of 4 stations designated by cones, assembled in a circle whose outer diameters were 40m, 30m, 20m, and 0m respectively. All PAX started at the Block station on the outer most ring of the target and performed 40 reps of the exercise listed at that cone. Upon completing the 40 reps, a PAX would run around the outside of the ring of the target for a full rotation, past their most recent cone, and ending at the next cone, carrying their block to the next cone when necessary. This continued three more times until the PAX completed the work/run cycle for all 4 cones within the outermost ring. At the end of each completed ring, a PAX would grab his block and carry it to the starting cone of the next most inward ring. This was repeated until the PAX completed the 40 reps of the exercise at the bullseye of the imaginary target.

    Exercises/cones were the following:

    Area Exercise
    Block: Curl
    Arms: Merkin
    Core: Big Boy Situp
    Legs: Squat

    Arms + Block: Overhead Press
    Legs + Block: Block Squat
    Legs + Core: Reverse Lunge
Arms + Core: Peter Parker Merkin

Legs + Core + Block: Block Reverse Lunge
Arms + Legs + Block: Thruster
Arms + Core + Block: WWIII
Arms + Legs + Core: Burpee

    Arms + Legs + Core + Block: Man-Maker

    Ended with:
    Count-O-Rama: 13
    Name-O-Rama

    The Six – Carmen Sandiego

    LDP3

    Ball of Man

Spreadsheets from the Gloom: 72F with 95% humidity…and you felt every bit of both. And it was awful. This was essentially a beefed up, modified version of “The Eddy” formula, but instead of AMRAP-ing an exercise for 45s, PAX completed 40 reps of the given exercise…which was significantly worse, especially as the exercises got more difficult. 40 curls isn’t that bad, nor is 40 BBSUs, but 40 thrusters followed by 40 WWIIIs, followed by 40 burpees followed by 40 man-makers would slow down even the biggest of spoons and the most coco of nuts. It was an absolute burner, and the weather made it even worse.

That said, the formula worked extremely well. 40 reps is about the max that you’d want to allocate for some of those exercises, and even at that quantity, some exercises took forever. But a handful of guys did finish with a little time to spare. So another station, increased rep-count, or larger diameter circles could be utilized in a follow-up run. And for as complicated as the beatdown was on paper, it ran pretty flawlessly. However…it only worked well because of the prep-work. Stations and exercises were color coded on the asphalt, arrows were present to indicate direction of travel, and cones were strategically placed to indicate starting locations for each ring of the target. If it had rained or been dark, it would likely have been a disaster. Moving the blocks to the necessary stations was also a tad bit clunky, but given the setup of the beatdown, there was no real way to avoid it.

Oh, there were some “O”s in the playlist too. 4 of them, to be exact. The four most notable music artists that started with an “O”. And yes…it was pointed out that “The Offspring” technically doesn’t begin with an “O”, but YHC had to work with what was available.

“Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)” – The Offspring
“Don’t Look Back In Anger” – Oasis
    “Skin Tight” – Ohio Players
    “Crazy Train” – Ozzy Osbourne
“Come Out And Play” – The Offspring
    “Wonderwall” – Oasis
    “Love Rollercoaster” – Ohio Players
“Mama, I’m Coming Home” – Ozzy Osbourne
    “Original Prankster” – The Offspring
    “Champagne Supernova” – Oasis
    “Fire” – Ohio Players

All in all it was an awesome birthday celebration and a great way to start a new decade. Was a pleasure to lead this one for sure.

    The “Thang”:

Apparently I only know one route…West on 6th street until it was time to turn around. But what the ruck lacked in route it made up for in discussion. As YHC was turning 40 years old, the topic was how leadership changes as we age. Prompts were the following:

    1. Experience vs. Energy — What have you gotten better at as a leader in the last 5–10 years, and what are you having to let go of or adapt (energy, ego, hustle culture, etc.)?
    2. Legacy over Ladder — If you think about the people you’ve led or influenced, what actually stuck with them? What do you want your “leadership echo” to be 20 years from now?
    3. Mentorship & Multiplication — Are you intentionally developing others yet? What’s the difference between being a good leader and being a leader-maker?
    4. Midlife Course Corrections — Share one leadership habit, belief, or priority you’ve changed (or need to change) since your 30s.
