  1. Combined Run/Ruck BB for 12/6/22 at Lower Necropolis

    PAX:
Ruck: Isosceles, HazMat, Guardian, Ten Pin, Huckleberry, Casper, Solo, Oil Change, Hannibal, Coal (Guardian/Iso co-Q)
Run: Woodstock, Dutch, Jennay, Landslide, Coconut (Q).

Intro: Guardian nailed the Mission and Core Principles. Groups separated (YHC only knows that ruckers carried and traded off sandbags, but not where or how far) and the runners headed across the bridge to Maumee for some target pace training:
Name your Pace, then run the segment and see how close you can hit your projected time.
segment 1 was 1km out and back. Shooting for a 4:20, YHC ran it in 4:02. too fast.
segment 2 was about 0.9mi loop, shooting for 7:00, clocked 5:46. way too fast.
segment 3 was 600m, and shooting for 3:00, came in in 2:47. too too fast.
segment 4 repeated 3, with the mandate to really push it, so aiming for 2:20, came in in 2:14…still too fast.

Everybody beat their times, usually by quite a lot.

Reflecting on this phenomenon, YHC is wondering why did we all underestimate our abilities…consistently? one possibility is that we don’t know ourselves that well, certainly possible. Also, these distances were pretty strange, and maybe doing the mental math to convert a planned pace (per mile) to a time for a goofy distance was challenging so early in the morning. But I think in my case there was a serious element of failing in the EQV. What I mean is–I didn’t want to ‘come off as boasting’ when predicting my time, and so i would rather underpromise and over-deliver than the other way around. It’s BS. I know my paces. I just ran a 5k a couple weeks ago, and at the very least i could have claimed that pace, knowing that all these stretches were shorter.

eye opening experience when i think of it that way. So I apologize to my fellow runners for sandbagging today and not holding true to myself. Iron sharpens iron, sand doesn’t.
