    Warm-up: Tarzan’s, Downward Dog/Cobra Kai, Monkey Howlers

    The Thang:

Started the workout with Thunderstruck by ACDC. Held in the Al Gore position, did a jump squat when it said Thunder, did a burpee when it said Thunderstruck.

When then walked over to the Category 1 Hurricane section. 10 curls, 10 shoulder presses, 10 goblet squats, 10 BBS and 10 burpees. Held Al Gore until everybody finished.

Winds started picking up and we found ourselves in a Category 2 hurricane. 20 curls, 20 shoulder press, 20 imperial walkers, 20 box cutters, 5 burpees. We waited until everyone finished and we jogged to the street and back, together.

We found ourselves in a Category 3. 30 bear squats, 30 gorilla humpers, 30 mountain climbers (hard way), 30 lunges (1 is 1), 30 LBC and 5 burpees. Next we jogged around the whole parking lot.

We started seeing more damage from the storm and we realized we were in a Category 4. 40 merkins, 40 lunges 1 is 1), Freddie Mercury’s (2 is 1), 40 plank jacks, 5 burpees. We then ran much faster around half of the parking lot representing faster winds.

Before we knew it, we hit Category 5. 50 dips, 50 LBC, 50 SSH. When finished, we did suicides. Each cone we had to add 1 burpee. Total of 4 cones.

We finally made it into the eye of the storm. First thing we did was do a roley polies to stretch a little. We then hopped into leg lifts that we held in 30, 60 and 90 degrees for over a minute.

We ended the workout with “In the air tonight” by Phil Collins. Thought it fit well with the theme. We held plank in various positions for the whole song.

    The “Thang”:

We transported PAX and kickballs between two sets of cones spread about 40 yards apart. The methods were as follows:

1.) Rocket Launch. Hairbrush’s brain-child, she manned a toy rocket launcher which sent the signal for the rest of the PAX to move…think Red Light Green Light. PAX could only move when the rocket was in the air. Goal was for teams to race to see which could MOT the length of the field, pick up all of the kick balls, and MOT back the fastest.

Round 1 had all PAX sprinting out and back. Round 2 had all PAX sprinting back, but adults had to bear crawl out.

2.) Partner Carry. Each team had to transport all of their kick balls AND all of their people from one side to the other. Every person EXCEPT for the last person on each team HAD to be carried over by someone else. A person could return to the starting line solo in order to carry something else or be carried. A person being carried could NOT be carrying a ball.

Round 1 anyone could carry a ball. Round 2 only 2.0s could carry a ball.

3.) Captured. Thick sharks and minnows. All 2.0s started at far end of the field while all adults were stationed in the middle of the field. 2.0s had to run to the other end without being tagged by adults. Adults could only move by bear crawl.

Round 1 was a narrow field. Round 2 saw a wider field, but ended up being not wide enough.

4.) Crane Game. This was a variation of the partner carry. Adults would pick up a 2.0 (ideally underneath the arms) and hold them while the 2.0 secured a kick ball between their feet. Adults would then lift the 2.0 and carry them across the field where they would be lowered to drop the ball like a crane. This continued for several rounds, but devolved a bit over time.

We ended by abandoning the kickballs and doing a wheelbarrow race the length of the field. Some 2.0s were the wheelbarrow the whole time and some larger ones flap-jacked midway through.

Spreadsheets from the Gloom: 89, sunny, and no breeze, with a heat index of 95. Holy crap this one was hot. Maybe even too hot. There’s a reason we work out at 5:30am in the morning when it’s cool and dark. Not sure how to properly plan for this given large open areas are basically a necessity for these large family friendly workouts. Shade is tough to come by under those circumstances. Only alternative could have been water; either squirt guns, buckets, or water balloons. Will certainly be a consideration during future summer family workouts.

Aside from the heat, most of the PAX seemed to enjoy themselves…lots of positive feedback all around. This seemed to strike a good balance of work and fun for both the kids AND the adults. Utilizing the 2.0s as weight helped with this considerably and will certainly be implemented in the future. Some of the ideas didn’t pan out exactly as intended, but they all worked out in the end. It’s definitely a different type of challenge to structure a workout for heat and small kids, but it was a blast.

Loved having the opportunity to have my daughter out there watching me lead, and for her to have the opportunity to plan/execute some of her own ideas in that group environment. Look forward to doing it again in some more moderate weather!

    Warm-up: In cadence to music?

    Sumo Squats (2 is 1) – 10
    Gore Claps (2 is 1) – 10

Split into 2 groups and did a percussive, synchronized warm-up with each of the two groups performing one of the two exercises above in cadence with each other.

    The “Thang”:

Ranked one of the top two beatdowns of 2024, this was a repeat of “The Reprise”, which was a longer, better, modified version of the original “Thriller” beatdown from Halloween 2024.

This was a 12-round ladder workout where a new rung was added to the ladder each round, each rung being an exercise out of the plank position. After each round, all PAX ran a four-tier suicide and held Al Gore while waiting for the 6 to finish. For the work portion, the PAX lined up side-by-side about 6 feet apart from one another in two lines drawn off by two sets of cones. This spacing was used to ensure every PAX had enough space to perform the Thriller routine without any collisions. On the Qs count the routine started, with YHC or alternate PAX calling out cadence throughout its entirety. During the last 4-count of each “rung” in the routine, the Q also called out what the next movement/exercise would be in the progression. This continued until the routine was complete for any given round. Run the suicides and repeat until entire routine was built and run in succession. The culmination of this was a 1:30 minute, in cadence routine performed by all PAX, from the plank position, to the backing Thriller track.

Dance exercise were as follows…and yes, they were included to try and mimic the dance moves MJ actually used in the video. Notices that J-Los were replaced with Mountain Climbers for this one given J-Lo’s are more or less a tamer version of Kick Throughs.

    Rd. Reps
    1.) Forward Bear Crawl Slow/fast: 4/8
    2.) T-Cross Hand Release Merkin: 4
    3.) Zebra Butt Kick (2 is 1): 4
    4.) Kick Through (2 is 1): 4
    5.) Plank Skier (2 is 1) 4
    6.) Lateral Bear Crawl Right/left: 8/8
    7.) Mountain Climbers (4 is 1) 4
    8.) Pickle Pounder (2 is 1): 4
    9.) Reverse Flying Squirrel 4
    10.) Plank Jack Shoulder Tap (2 is 1): 4
    11.) Floyd Mayweather Plank Punch (2 is 1): 4
    12.) Plank Compass: 16

After the final round, there was an encore. PAX split up into 3 groups. Group 1 started performing sumo squats in cadence, with the stomp occurring on beats 1 and 3. Group 2 came in one measure later, performing gore claps in cadence with Group 1’s sumo squats and hitting their claps on beats 2 and 4. Finally, Group 3 came in and performed the entire extended Thriller routine to the beat of the other 2 groups. No backing track, Black Swamp acapella.

2nd encore was a final run through with the whole group (sans Coconut), to the backing track, for purposes of capturing the 2nd greatest mid-beatdown video in the history of the Black Swamp.

    Ball of Man

Spreadsheets from the Gloom: This beatdown absolutely rips, and the video proves it. The men on the south side of the river took this routine and the synchronicity required to perform it to a completely new level; raising the bar to new heights. YHC has probably watched the video 50 times as a result. Poetry in motion. But…the routine can be better. The plank punches don’t provide a whole lot of visual stimulation. We need more movement. More motion. John Travolta’s would probably be more visually appealing as a dance move.

At the end of the day, this was not the same Thriller as in the late fall. That one was cardiovascularly doable from the perspective of calling cadence. This one was not. The humidity and the heat elevated this beatdown from challenging to absolute burner. So much so that the Q needed to delegate counting duties to another PAX in order to maintain order and fluidity during the latter half of the routine. Coconut was up to the challenge and put his musical abilities on display calling cadence (while YHC called out the exercises) from about round 6 on. He even took double duty during the 2nd encore and called both cadence and exercises while filming that masterpiece of a video.

I still think this has even more potential…not necessarily as a beatdown proper, but as a routine…for marketing purposes/fun. I’d like to get a solid group of rhythmic guys together (maybe 10 or so) to master the routine and do an actual performance of it with no cues and no missteps. It could go down in the annals of F3 lore and would certainly shine a light on the region.

As I’ve said before, this beatdown will be back, likely as a hallowed staple. But the approach will also be back. There are currently two installments in the books with another 2 on the horizon. Keep an eye out for them.
